Play All Day VA - Summer Solstice 2024

Join us for a full day of activities and getting outside to PLAY on the longest day of the year.  
From a sunrise hike to morning and afternoon activities, finished off with an evening celebration, we look forward to seeing you out to celebrate PlayAllDayVA with us.  

PlayAllDayVA is a statewide initiative organized by the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society to celebrate the longest day (the summer solstice) through PLAY! The mission is to provide FREE programs and services for the community from sunrise to sunset. The goal is for citizens to get involved in community programs that highlight what P&R represents!

Nelson County Parks and Recreation will be hosting the following activities throughout the day:

5:30am:   First Light Hike Through The Blue Ridge
  • A sunrise guided hike through the Historic Blue Ridge Tunnel.
  • This 3 mile hike is geared toward all ages.
  • The hike will be guided by a member of the Blue Ridge Tunnel Foundation who will be able to provide information and history of the tunnel along the way.  
  • We will begin from the East Trailhead and hike through the Blue Ridge Mountains to    the Western Portal before returning to the East Trailhead. 
  • Those wishing to walk the entire Western Trail are more than welcome to split from the group at the Western Portal and continue on their way.

9:00 - 11:00am:   Pickleball Open Play
  • Join us at Rockfish Valley Community Center for a morning of Pickleball.
  • This free and open play session is geared to players of all ages and abilities.
  • We will have loaner equipment available for anyone who does not have a paddle.

10:00am - Noon:   Popsicles On The Playground
  • Join us for a treat while we support Rockfish Valley Community Center and the newest public playground in Nelson County.
  • While here, also take in lunch at the new eatery, Coquito Kitchen located in RVCC or grab a refreshing coffee or drink at Trager Brothers Coffee.

2:00 - 3:00pm:   Yoga
  • Our normal Sunday Gentle Yoga program is making it's PlayAllDayVA appearance on a Thursday.
  • This gentle yoga session is geared toward all ages and abilities to provide an easy and accommodating experience to yoga.  
  • The class will be held at the Nelson Center in the Great Room.  

5:00 - 8:00pm:   Nelson Community PLAY Celebration
  • We will cap off our longest day with a Community PLAY Celebration held at the Nelson Center.
  • Join us for bounce houses, kickball games, yard games, etc.
  • Food Options by Amazing Angus LLC and KONA Ice
  • Nelson 4-H will also be providing free Archery Lessons throughout the evening.
  • Free Taekwondo Lessons inside from 5:30-7pm
  • Free Zumba class inside from 7:15-8pm

ALL DAY:   Get Outside On The Trails
  • Find time to get outside and visit some of the many trails around Nelson County.
  • Visit www.nelsoncounty.com/hikes-trails for a full list of public access trails around the county.
  • While on your hikes, snap a picture and share your adventures with us.
  • Post them on social media with the hashtags: #HikeNelson and #PlayAllDayVA
